Little Buggers!

This my friends is my favorite bird. The Cardinal. I have two feeders out hoping for the chance to have them visit my house.

But these guys, (Red-Winged Blackbird) are hogs and are at the feeder most of the time. They even hang out in the tree next to the feeders and swoop down at the feeder if anyone else shows up.

Any suggestions as to getting rid of the blackbird's so I can attract OTHER kinds of birds?

Maybe I need to invest in a pellet gun?

Happy SITS Day and Thanks a Million Heather & Tiffany!

  1. We have a red-winged blackbird that is so obnoxious. He wakes us up each morning by banging into the window and screeching.

  2. That red winged black bird looks kinda mean! I wonder if a pellet gun would chase them away - we're attempting to chase our neighbor's pit bull out of our yard with one... ;)

Congrats on being featured! Happy SITS Day! :)

  3. When I was 8 months pregnant, living in a house with no air conditioning, in the middle of August, we had a sudden attack of the red-winged blackbirds in my neighbor's tree.

He used to go out at SIX o'CLOCK IN THE FREAKING MORNING and bang two blocks of wood together to get rid of them.

Do you know how tempting it was to grab those blocks and bang him upside the head?

'Cept he was 80. So I let it go.

    The birds stayed.

There's no point to this comment.

  4. Happy SITS Day! I have the same problem. I never get any Cardinals, although I see lots of them around the neighborhood. But...Red-Winged Blackbirds...they love my feeder. ?????

  6. Maybe if you keep running outside screaming hysterically it'll scare the bird away? I know that would scare the mess out of me :)

    Happy SITs day!

  7. Red-winged blackbirds are pretty too. I love that vibrant stripe.
Lets see, since the cardinals are in the finch family and the RWBBs are not, maybe they have special feeders for them? I have a feeder that only my goldfinches and the occasional chickadee can eat from...just a thought.

  9. I have been desperately trying to get rid of those d*mn black birds this season too. My neighbor said to let the feeder go empty for a bit and they would move on. I guess I will give it a try.

Hey, come over to my humble little place and answer the question "I am..." today - or go one step further and enter the contest (see the details at the post) bring your friends with you ;)

  11. We have tons of Cardinals here in Maine...but I swear, for every Cardinal, there are three big fat blue jays that are mean, pushy and wicked domineering when it comes to all 5 of our feeders. Yes, this is coming from the woman who hates birds...but being a photographer, I love to shoot them. I'd love to do that to the blue jays too...except not with a camera! Oh and robins are almost as bad and they aren't anything as pretty as the blue jays...just stingy!

Oh and don't even get me started on the squirrels and chipmunks. Maybe I'll go get a pellet gun after all! My cat can only eat so many of the pesky things a day!

  12. Live and let live, I say.

Of course, I hate all birds so maybe it should be kill and let kill. Something like that.

  16. I am severely allergic to birds so it's hard for me this time of year when the birds come back. I love birds, think they are beautiful they just make me unable to breathe. Good luck on getting rid of the red-winged.

  18. Both look a little on the gangsta side if you ask me. The Cardinal with his spiky mohawk & black goatee...the RWBB with his mean mug & beady little eyes. Clearly a turf ware going on here, watch yourself....

  21. LOL! It's funny how things work. We can't get rid of the giant Cardinals!! They keep scaring away our Bluebirds an Goldfinches! And I would LOVE to catch a Redwinged Blackbird around here!!!! The seem to stick to the little swampy areas near the highway. :(
I'll see if I can shoo you som red birds!

  22. My 3 year old loves watching our bird feeder. She calls the cardinals the mommy & daddy cardinals. I hope you get some cardinals they are so pretty. Our PITA visitor is a squirrel. We have a squirrel proof feeder and he still finds a way to get around it.

  30. It's cool when they are doing mating rituals though. They get so big and fluffy dancing around the females. No clue as to how to get rid of them. Ever watch Steel Magnolias? Guy loaded the tree with massive fireworks trying to get rid of his.

  31. You have my sympathies--I can't stand those blackbirds! After 30 minutes they end up eating all my birdseed and that stuff isn't cheap! I mean, cheep. Get it?!

    Happy SITS day!

  32. I say stand at the feeder and every time a black bird comes up and hogs all the food, just start talking smack about their mothers. Trust me, it works every time!

    ; )

  35. Happy SITS day. No advice for getting rid of that bird. I have some Cardinals in my trees if you'd like to come for a visit!

  36. Hey---I love red winged blackbirds! Although the red bar crosses at a different angle on the ones here in California. But I understand. If I had the chance to see cardinals in all their bright red glory I'd probably want to keep the others guys at bay.

  37. Happy SITS Day! What a fun Blog! Getting rid of red-winged blackbirds...I have no suggestions on that on. Agressive little buggers, I had one nearly clip my head off when I ran too close to a nest.

  38. those pics are so pretty sometimes I think we forget to stop and admire some of the beauty around us (wow that sounded mushy but true)

  39. Happy SITS day! No solutions for you but we do have a Cardinal making rare appearances in our backyard. I think he's camera shy, though, because he never lets me snap a photo. Good luck!

  41. Beautiful photographs! Forget about how to get rid of the birds, just keep taking their pictures and make them into note cards or something. Here in Virginia the Cardinal is our state bird, but I hardly ever see them. Lucky you :)
